Nikkor 24-70G 2.8N

Well, this lens needs no introduction. It’s one of the “holy trinity” as we like to call them, along with the 14-24 & 70-200VR2.
It’s fast it’s sharp and it takes great images every time.

But it has it’s downs too.

It’s heavy, it’s quite long and it’s kind of fragile.

I found it the hard way, as it has fail me after 1 and half years of use. Yes, it lives on my D3 almost 80% of the time and yes it gets the pro use.
I mean, i used my 17-55DX even harder and longer and it still working at 100%

What failed?

The internal lens alignment as i told from Nikon. The service’s opinion is the the lens has either dropped or shaken vigorously. I don’t recall such a thing.
The problem is that it focus diagonal into the frame meaning that for the left part of the image and until the center, focus is where you put it but as you move to the right part of the frame it starts drifting to the background.

This is an example of what happening. I have focus the camera dead center. on the left the fan is out of focus as it should. But as we move to the right of the frame, focus goes to the back of the image. The settings on the 24-70 where: 24mm f2.8, 1/125, ISO 1000

Anyway, the 24-70 along with the 14-24 are Nano coated lenses. As such they are not serviceable in Greece and the policy of Nikon Greece is to replace the whole lens (apart from box, caps, etc) with a NEW one and pay half the price.
Not a bad solution since you get a brand new production lens for (a little more than) half the money.

The downside is that if you scratch the front element per say, it means that you are going the same root. The lens is not serviceable.

***UPDATE*** 28/06/2012

Today i got the call from Nikon that the lens has arrive.
Cudos to Nikon for the fast delivery.

What i got is a brand new 24-70 lens for 845euros. No box or anything else, just the lens itself.

I wish it wasn’t broke to start with, but what can you do?

Well after much anticipation for this lens it is finally in my hands.

It is a replacement for the 85mm f1.8D and it brings none of the flashy Nikon stuff. No Nano coating, no Aspherical elements, no VR, no 9 aperture blades…

But you know what? It works! It is a cheap leans that has the looks, no weight to it, and it renders beautiful photos.

One drawback is the somewhat slow focus, but all 85mm lenses are slow to acquire focus. When it’s locked tho it is spot on.
It also lacks the wow factor of it’s (two times more expensive) brother the 85mm f1.4N. But it’s no slouch in the bokeh department.

At the end of the day, i liked the 1.8. More images to come!
